What to eat when in Santorini, Greece | Adventure Yogi
We love the delicious Greek cuisine food in Santorini!
To start, not only is Santorini breathtakingly beautiful, but it also offers some of the best selection of traditional Greek cuisine. Choose from local tavernas or high-end restaurants, pick a table with a view of the Caldera in the moonlight and fill your appetite against the backdrop of azure blue skies. Here are our favourites of what to eat when in Santorini
Tomato Fritters (Gefthedes)
Home of the Santorini tomato it would be rude not to try this local delicacy. Sweet, cherry-sized tomatoes are fried in olive oil with pepper, onions, and herbs bound in a batter. This Greek cuisine is usually served as a delicious vegetarian appetizer.
Saganaki
In Greek cuisine, Saganaki is any one of a variety of dishes prepared in a small frying pan, the best-known being an appetizer of fried cheese. The cheese used in cheese Saganaki is usually graviera, kefalograviera, halloumi, kasseri, kefalotyri, or sheep’s milk feta cheese. Eat it with the bread provided, usually pita bread, but sometimes other kinds. Cut off small pieces and put it with small pieces of bread. You can also skip the bread and eat the cut cheese pieces with a fork. Yum!
Greek Salad
The epitome of Greek cuisine! Typically it’s made with tomatoes, cucumbers, onion, feta cheese, and kalamata olives. Garnished with olive oil and oregano, this is a delicious salad. In Santorini, they are often made with lettuce however, that is not the traditional way. Sometimes, peppers and of course capers are added giving it a sharper taste.
Pomegranates
The Pomegranate is a symbol of good luck, abundance, youth, and fertility since antiquity. This nutritious fruit has a wonderful taste and is part of a Greek New Year’s custom. Each New Year, a pomegranate is broken on the threshold of the doorway for good luck! When not being smashed, they are used in salads and delicious juices.
Fava
Probably the most famous traditional dish in Santorini and Greek cuisine, made from yellow split pea puree. Usually served warm with olive oil and lemon and occasionally topped with capers or onions.
Capers
Santorini is full of Capers! And, we love them! Essentially, capers are the unopened edible flower buds! Picked and sun-dried until they harden and turn yellow. Sprinkle them on salads for a delicious boost of flavour!
Raw Local Ingredients
One of our favorites, Aktaion is a family-run Greek tavern that opened over 90 years ago The menu is solely based on raw local ingredients with delicious dishes like zucchini pie, marinated anchovies with garlic, grilled and marinated mains, or shrimps in basil pesto.
My mouth is watering but not long to wait to get my fix of delicious Greek cuisine as our next trip to Santorini. Why not come and see for yourself! Or, check out our calendar page for more on all of our adventures
